Werewolf by Night finds himself in deadly danger - deep in the heart of TRANSYLVANIA! Plus, classic tales of Marvel horror throughout the ages!

[This story takes place between WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #26 and #27.]

Chapter One: "Spawned in Dream... Slain in Nightmare" - The Werewolf roams the nighttime streets of Monterey when a billboard he passes shimmers into the image of Topaz. She reaches into the beast's psyche for the mind of Jack Russell, pleading for him to rescue her from within his ancestral castle. Memories of Blackgar Island, where Russoff Castle was rebuilt, impel the Werewolf to swim out toward it. He reaches the castle and finds Topaz inside, but she is merely an illusion that fades as a trapdoor opens beneath his feet. At the bottom, he is accosted by a creature covered with silver spikes. The thing embraces the Werewolf in a death grip, silver spikes penetrating his flesh.

Chapter Two: "Home to Slay!" - Jack wakes from his nightmare. He dresses and goes downstairs where he meets his step-father Philip, just returned from the Transylvanian village where he was born. He went to follow up on news he'd heard of murders and vandalism in and around Russoff Manor. While overseeing repairs, he'd heard rumors of a blonde girl held captive by gypsies. Jack then recalls his dream and realizes Topaz must have tried to reach him through his dream, then decides he must go to Transylvania to aid her. His sister Lissa and friend Buck Cowan join him.

In the Transylvanian village, the trio witness a mob angry about the murders, and out for gypsy blood, preparing to storm Russoff Manor. Fearing for Topaz, Jack rushes to beat the crowd to the manse, where inside he sees an image of Topaz. She tells him she's been captured by the gypsies, then he transforms under the full moon. The villagers invade the manor and attack him, but he leaps from a terrace and runs into the forest.

Chapter Three: "Vengeance in Death" - Roaming the forest, the Werewolf comes across a gypsy camp where he finds Topaz, shackled and caged. Before he can free her, an aged gypsy woman finds them, and sets her bear upon the man-beast. Armed with a spiked collar and metal claws coated with silver, the bear mauls his lupine foe. Despite the violent display, the rest of the gypsies stand about, uninterested. Meanwhile, Buck and Lissa have managed to find the encampment, and they free Topaz. His fury building, the Werewolf makes one final attack upon his ursine opponent, toppling the bear into the campfire.

The furious gypsy crone then orders her fellows to kill the Werewolf, and they are revealed to be animated corpses. The man-beast slashes through them while Topaz uses her psychic abilities to reach into the old woman's mind. Abruptly, her sanity returns, and, in attempting to stop a knife thrown at the Werewolf, is herself stabbed. Dawn comes, and Jack is human again.

As she dies, the woman, Maria, calls Jack her grandson. Topaz comfirms that this is true; she had been ostrasized by the villagers for her son's curse, but was welcomed by the gypsy band. She learned magic there, until the day she found the entire group murdered. Seeking vengeance, she resurrected their bodies and sent them out to kill those she felt responsible. Hearing the sad tale, the villagers offer to at least give Maria a proper burial.

This issue also includes four stories reprinted from Atlas comics of the 1950s: "The Visitor", "The Man Who Went Back!", "The Man Who Talked to Rats!" and "The Hands of Death"
